What is National Defense Day?

The DDN (National Defense Day) aims to sensitize young people to the theme of national defense and publicize the role of the Armed Forces and takes place in the CDDN (National Defense Day Disclosure Centers), based in military units from the three branches of the Armed Forces . During National Defense Day, a set of activities are developed to make young people aware of the importance of National Defense and the role and mission of the Portuguese Armed Forces. Training actions to inform you about: - National Defense - The essential missions of the Armed Forces, their organization and the resources that are attached to them - The ways of providing Military Service and the different possibilities of choice for those who want to provide service effective DDN attendance is a military duty for all Portuguese citizens over 18 years of age.

Who should attend?

For the year 2020 - All young people born during the year 2001 will be invited to fulfill the National Defense Day. During the year 2021 - All young people born during the year 2002 will be invited to fulfill the National Defense Day. During the year 2022 - All young people born during the year 2003 will be invited to fulfill National Defense Day.

When am I summoned?

Call notices are posted at city halls, parish councils, consular posts and online. The online Public Notices contain the places and days on which each citizen must report to fulfill this military duty, and information on the situation regarding the DDN. Citizens who have already complied with the DDN or will request postponement, waiver, exemption or justification of absence can consult the online notices about the status of their situation before the DDN.

What kind of transport do you offer?

Citizen transportation to the National Defense Disclosure Centers (CDDN) depends on your area of residence. To find out the type of transport that applies to your situation, consult the notices. Transport modalities: Own means: Citizens must present themselves at the respective CDDN until 08h45m, the day for which they are summoned. Bus: The citizen to present himself in the respective CDDN, must board the bus provided by the MDN, at the place and time defined. Transport Request: Citizens must present themselves at the respective CDDN until 08h45m, on the day for which they are summoned. To request a Transport Request, you must complete the form provided on the National Defense Day website.

I live abroad, what to do?

Portuguese citizens, of both sexes who have been legally resident abroad, on a permanent and continuous basis, for more than 6 months, or who have been born abroad and remain there, with regard to the fulfillment of their military duty to appear in the DDN, must choose one of the following options: Appointment of Call - Request the appointment of day to fulfill the military duty of appearance to the DDN. Request Waiver - Request waiver of attendance at the DDN if legally resident abroad permanently and continuously, for more than six months.
