Voter Registration

The Law on Voter Registration was been changed. Approved unanimously in the Assembly of the Republic, the new law has changed some rules of organization and functioning of the voter registration process, in the sense of simplification and modernisation of procedures, through auto-enrollment, thus facilitating the life of citizens and, simultaneously, higher printing accuracy and transparency to the process.

To whom is mandatory the registration in the voter register?

Registration is mandatory for all Portuguese citizens residing in portugal, and over the age of 17 years.

Since registration is mandatory, what should I do to register?

Nothing. From now on, the Portuguese citizens over the age of 17 years old or older are automatically enrolled.

When I change my residence, what should I do to transfer my registration in the electoral roll?

Have to necessarily proceed to the update of the residence Card of Citizen. The transfer of registration in the voter registration operates, then, automatically.

How do I vote by post?

MAI sends the necessary documentation to vote to the address indicated in the electoral register, by the fastest postal route, under registration. The voter receives a ballot paper, in which he marks his voting option, a green envelope, in which he must insert the ballot paper folded in four, and a white envelope in which he inserts the green envelope, as well as a photocopy of the ballot. Citizen Card / Identity Card, which closes and returns by post until election day. Sending the vote by post is free.
